One theme that is constant in Exodus is how quickly the people grumble despite God's deliverance. No sooner had he brought them out of Egypt and to the Red sea than they wanted to return to Egypt because it looked like an impossible feat to escape. But God delivered them. Once a little adversity came their way, and they were thirsty and only found bitter water to drink, they grumbled again. But God delivered clean water to them. But then they became hungry, and they grumbled again. So God delivered quail and manna to them to eat. And they became thirsty again, and could find no water, so yet again, they grumbled. And again, God delivered water to them.
Through all of this, God delivered grace in the wilderness to those who were unworthy. These are gospel stories. People who welcomed God's deliverance when it was convenient for them but overlooked his provision for them when the going got tough. Yet God remained faithful and provided and delivered...and provided and delivered...and provided and delivered.
