In these early chapters, Mark sets the stage for mission by establishing and demonstrating Jesus' authority and the various responses to Jesus. As the narrative progresses, Mark blends a simple declaration and demonstration of Jesus' authority with stories that intertwine Jesus' authority with reaction to it--either from the crowds, who create conflict for Jesus by seeking healing that gets in the way of his preaching, or from the religious leaders, who create conflict out of their disagreement with Jesus.
I close the study with a reflection on Jesus' call, which must be heard and then obeyed by following, and a challenge to begin shaping your life around the theme of hearing the call and following Jesus.
