The gospel is God's plan for the world. We can spend our lifetimes building things for ourselves, or we can give ourselves to something bigger than ourselves--to God, his gospel, and his life.
Sometimes we are careless in our ongoing transformation. Some reasons for this include a lack of holiness, a lack of seriousness in prayer, and a lack of caring for others. These will result not only in stunted spiritual growth, but also in a moving away from God.
We can give proper attention to our spiritual growth through Bible reading, prayer and worship, having a compassionate stance towards people, and taking care that we do not despise the Son of God.
Revelation was written to encourage Christians who were literally losing their lives for the sake of Christ to maintain their hope in God. It promises one thing--that God wins. We should stay on the side of the victor. No matter how things crash in around us, God is faithful and we can endure because of him.
This passage also sounds a warning to those of us who may become lazy in our faith because of the comfort we have in our lives.
